What is Diabetes?
Diabetes is a health condition that happens when your blood glucose, also known as blood sugar, is very high. Listed are the most common types of diabetes: Type 1, Type 2, Prediabetes and Gestational Diabetes. However, type 1 and 2 are the ones you hear about most often.
Type 1 Diabetes:
A condition in which the pancreas makes little to no insulin.
Type 2 Diabetes:
A condition that affects how the body processes glucose.
Prediabetes:
A condition where the blood sugar is high, but not high enough to be diagnosed as type 2 diabetes.
Gestational Diabetes:
A condition where the blood sugar is high during gestation (pregnancy).
Symptoms of Diabetes:
- Excessive thirst and urination
- Weight loss
- Blurred Vision
- Slow-healing sores
- Fatigue
- Numbness or tingling in hands/feet
To prevent being diagnosed, maintain a healthy and balanced diet. Stay physically active. Make sure you get your bloodwork checked annually to monitor sugar levels.
