Telemedicine Q & A
What is telemedicine?
Telemedicine, also known as virtual medicine, is an easy to use, HIPAA-compliant way to receive quality medical care virtually rather than in person. It allows your provider to use electronic technology to provide health care remotely. At Guardian Physicians, Dr. Oyekoya offers visits via video chat, and she’s readily available through text message and email.
If you have access to a computer, tablet, or smartphone and an internet connection, you can take advantage of telemedicine.
During your visit, you video chat with Dr. Oyekoya to address your health concern.
Depending on your diagnosis or needs, Dr. Oyekoya can prescribe medication, make suggestions for home health care, put together a wellness plan, or refer to a specialist.
Who uses telemedicine?
Anyone can request telemedicine services, but they’re most popular with people who:
- Live in remote and rural areas
- Lack adequate transportation
- Are short on time
- Can’t physically leave the house
- Require assistance to get to the doctor’s office
- Are immunocompromised
Telemedicine is a great option for people who’ve just been discharged from the hospital or nursing care, and so shouldn’t move around too much or expose themselves to potential illness.
It’s also popular with people suffering from minor illnesses or injuries that Dr. Oyekoya can assess over video.
How does telemedicine work?
Your telemedicine platform offers services such as:
Two-way, high-definition video
With telemedicine, you use videoconferencing so that you have a face-to-face meeting with your provider — like you’re sitting together in your doctor’s office.
Digital patient registration
You register online, where you can submit your symptoms, allergies, medications, medical history, and ID cards prior to your first teleconference visit with your doctor.
Your doctor manages your medications and sends your prescriptions electronically to your preferred pharmacy.
Secure online payment
Telemedicine software allows you to securely send your payment online.
Chat and photo-sharing capabilities
You can chat with your doctor and easily upload photos of your symptoms when applicable. Communication is a two-way street, as your physician can reach out to you with messages.
HIPAA is a law that protects the privacy of your medical records and personal health information. Your telemedicine interactions are also secure, and only authorized users can access your telemedicine sessions.
What are the advantages of telemedicine?
Telemedicine offers patients an abundance of advantages, including:
With telemedicine, you can avoid traffic and wasting time on travel. This gives you more time to focus on what’s important, your health. There’s no need to worry about the weather, either, since you can access health care indoors and in the privacy of your home.
No time off work
Telemedicine eliminates the need to miss work or request leave. Since you can see Dr. Oyekoya from anywhere, you can even schedule visits during breaks at work, or later in the day after work.
Reduced stress on caregivers
If you are the caregiver of elderly parents or have children, it’s difficult to find time to take care of your own health care needs. Alternative care is difficult and expensive. Telemedicine is a great solution because it allows you to visit Dr. Oyekoya from where it is convenient for you.
Because telemedicine requires neither travel costs nor money lost from taking time off work, it’s an incredibly affordable health care option. In addition, many insurance plans cover telemedicine care, and for those that don’t, Guardian Physicians offers very affordable self-pay rates.
Reduced health risks
With virtual health care, you can get the care you need while avoiding unnecessary exposure to sick people. This is especially beneficial to the elderly, immunocompromised, and those recovering from surgery.

Will insurance pay for telehealth?
Some insurance companies cover telehealth, while others don’t. Additionally, some states require insurance companies to reimburse at the same rate as they cover for in-person appointments. In most states, Medicaid covers telehealth. Check with your insurance provider to find out if you’re covered.
As of March 6, 2020, Medicare is paying providers across the United States to provide telehealth services due to the COVID-19 crisis. However, this Medicare coverage may be a temporary benefit.
