What is depression?
Depression (Major Depressive Disorder) is a condition that affects a person's mood, the way they think and actions. This condition can cause feelings of sadness and loss of interest in things a person once enjoyed. Although depression is a very serious condition, it is in fact treatable.
Symptoms of Depression:
- Feeling sad or having a depressed mood
- Changes in appetite
- Trouble falling asleep or sleeping too much
- Suicidal thoughts or thoughts of death
- Increased fatigue
- Feeling "empty"
- Difficulty concentrating
Not everyone will experience every symptom listed above. However, most experience a few out of the list. Depression can happen at any age, but often starts during adulthood.
If you or know anyone who is experiencing symptoms listed above, please encourage them to see a doctor or a therapist.
In addition to that help is always available. The suicide hotline number is: 800-273-8255 and someone is available 24/7.
